In Europe this type of set up is called a 'Paludarium'. It almost always has a very substantial aquatic section with a dry land portion above. Most of the time species are chosen which occur in the same region. For example, one popular subject is South American rain forest, so you'd inhabit the paludarium with dart frogs and small schooling fish like Cardinal Tetras, both of which occur in the same habitats.
