Prey size?

I have an ~3ft boa and largest body size is a little bigger than a toilet paper roll. Im being told to feed it several hopper mice instead of a small/medium rat the size of the largest portion of the body. From the research ive been reading on the net, ive heard to feed based upon the largest body portion which im thinking is correct. Anyone feed this way or the other?
