You could always use ammo-lock which would help nuetralize some of the toxins in the tank. I'd recommend getting a duetto filter to help filter the tank, they're about 20 dollars online. The other thing is to make sure when you do water changes is not to use hot water or anything. If you have gravel or sand, don't rinse them in hot water or cold water. When you scrub the tank, scrub it while the tank water is still in there. You don't want to kill all of the beneficial bacteria growing. Also, do like 75% water changes instead of all of it at one time. You want to keep the bacteria as intact as possible.
Also, with the basking light AND the heater, your temperature is going to be quite high which just speeds everything up. Try turning down the aquarium heater to 70 degrees. With the basking light, it's going to get well above 80.
