Surinam cherries (eugenia unifolia) work well they are non-toxic have lots of branches(more shrub-like)grow relatively fast grow much smaller than ficus(12-15 ft. as compared to oak tree size.) and they take well to pruning. they are common hedge plants in central and south fla and in california and are hardy to the upper 20's f with some leaf damage(obviously not a relavent point in indoor cham cage but good to know for summertime outdoor cages.) They pop up on e-bay occasionally if you don't live in fla or ca. They do need more light and humidity than ficus but most indoor chams including veileds could use more light and humidity than they get so such plants are good light/ humidity indicators. Coffee plants are another good plant that is under- utilized and are becoming more available these days. They are similar in ultimate size to surinam cherries but they require less light and grow much slower.
