>>I am trying to compile a list of which states will allow you to keep western, eastern, and southern hognose, and which states will not. If anybody know the laws concerning this in their state or a link I can go to I would really appreciate it. It would save me hours of research. Thanks.

non-native hognoses are not regulate in maryland. only easterns are regulated.

In MD (currently) you are allowed to have up to 4 eastern hogs without a permit. With a permit you can have more than 4 easterns but you are limited to only 4 of them having been taken from the wild (the others have to have documentation proving they are captive bred and/or legally obtained from outside of the state).

Now I say "currently"... there are proposed regulations that may go into effect before the end of this year that will further restrict eastern hogs.

Under the new proposal, (if I read it rightly) easterns would be moved from List A over to List B and that would then make the limit of 1 eastern hog without a permit. With a permit, you could have more than one eastern, but are limited to only 1 having been taken from the wild and you must have documentation showing that any others were captive bred / legally obtained from outside of the state. When (if) the regulations go into effect, there is a clause allowing people who already exceed the new proposed limits to have the option of writing to the director before the end of the year to have their "excess" animals grandfathered in and that grandfather permit is NOT transferable. That means any future owners you might sell your grandfathered animals to must already be in compliance of the new laws if they live in maryland.

Irregardless if the new proposal goes into effect or not - the state assumes your easterns are wild caught if you do not have any legal documentation/sales recpt/etc.. showing that they are captive bred, etc.
