I usually take the hides out. It's easier to keep an eye on them and it keeps the snakes from pushing the hide up against the top of the rack making it hard to pull out the tub. Several of mine don't even have hides since they don't use them in the rack. As for pairing them, I'd just leave them together for a few days or so...if you're not seeing locks yet it might just be early in the season. Last season none of my pairs started breeding until January.
