The male will go in the hides with the female, if he can fit, and a lot of times even if he can't. If the hides are big enough for both, and it's not going to cause you any major problems, leaving them in isn't a big deal.
If they're ready to breed, they'll get after it. Like the previous reply mentioned - leave em together for a few days, or until you see copulation. If there's no interest the first time, just try again in a week.
I let mine have their "space" when they were shedding, but there's different schools of thought on that. Some people swear by putting them together when they're in shed, some don't... if your snakes don't copulate, try putting them together even if they are in shed. Never hurts to try!
