When my air conditioning malfunctioned last summer (before I had thermostats on my cages), I found my snakes hiding under the newspaper etc. trying to escape the heat. I don't know why piling something on top of themselves would help cool them off, but it's what they did. What are your cage temperatures, and do you have a thermostat on the cage?
