I didn't see the pics, but it sounds like when they curl up tight, sometimes they'll have almost folded themselves in half at points. The scales inside these creases will often be bent outwards from the pressure if they stay in that position for extended periods. It may well be a humidity issue also, too low, that makes this happen. Just an uneducated guess.
