WDSU (New Orleans, Louisiana) 17 December 07 Turtle Smuggler Sentenced Mobile, Ala.: A Florida man will spend three years on probation after pleading guilty in Alabama to smuggling endangered turtles across state line. Carol Gene Arnold, 63, admitted to buying endangered Alabama red-belly turtles beginning in 2002. Arnold pleaded guilty in August to violating the Lacey Act, which prohibits the transportation of wildlife that was knowingly captured illegally. He also pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of violating the Endangered Species Act. Arnold was sentenced in federal court in Mobile. He said he has bought and raised turtles legally for 30 years, selling them to turtle farms in Louisiana that supply pet stores. Turtle Smuggler Sentenced
