In a nut shell - the female is always growing follicles - if introduced to a male at the right time she will continue to grow her follicles and then release a certain amount for fertilization (if no male she will absorb the follicles). Ovulation is when the follicles are pushed into the oviducts for fertilization by the stored up sperm (becoming an egg) - it's fairly easy to notice it looks like she swallowed a football for about 24 hours - at this point you can stop pairing them up - his job is done.



It's more a matter of the females timing as opposed to how many copulations - as for pairings - most people shoot for a variation of once a week to a couple of times a month - depending on how many females their males are breeding - allowing for feedings and rest, etc.
