The book you had sounds like Mara's book and you can still get it at amazon.com I believe. As far as pits go there is really very little out there has a lot of content. If you are a new herper, I would suggest starting withsome of the older books on species etc. like Reptiles by Ditmars and then move up to todays works from there. For a lot of fun if you love herps get Kaufields Snakes the keepr and the kept
