Normally hemipenes are tucked inside the body. When mating, the hemipenes will poke out of the vent. This can also happen when the lizard is just excited, and sometimes with defecation. It should return inside quite quickly. Once in a while male lizards experience prolapse of the hemipenes, where they are not able to retract. This is a serious condition. If that happens Keep the area moist with sugary water and sterile lumbricant (not petroleum jelly) and get to the vet ASAP. | ||
