THE STAR (Sheffield, UK) 12 January 08 Snake found hiding in rubbish (Richard Marsden)
Workers were faced with a slippery customer when they cleared rubbish from a Sheffield estate - a snake!
A 10 inch-longbaby albino corn snake was found hiding in rubbish at Winn Gardens, Middlewood.
The creature, which is native to the warmer parts of North America, lives on a diet of live mice and rodents, and can grow to 6ft long.
It is harmless to humans and is believed to have been an unwanted Christmas present which could have been thrown away.
Sheffield Homes' staff often find abandoned pets such as dogs, cats and rabbits on housing estates but were surprised at the unusual discovery.
The snake was dehydrated and very cold but survived its ordeal and is being nursed back to health with a spell of emergency care from a local snake expert.
It will then be adopted by Sheffield Homes' worker Katie Oliver.
She named the reptile 'Heidi' because of its pinky colour - although it has subsequently been found to be male.
