I made one recipe (attempt #1) with banana, potato flakes, powdered sugar, baby bird formula (powder since I had some lying around), methyl paraben, water, and active baker's yeast. My recipe ended up too moist, so I remade a new recipe (attempt #2)with more fruits (white nectarine, banana, and a lemon), potato flakes, powdered sugar, distilled vinager, water, and active baker's yeast. The consistency of this new batch is great. Just waiting to see how well it works.
Of my first batch (recipe attempt #1), I made 2 containers and put about 1/3 of my fruit flies I bought from the pet store in each. Here is my time table for what happened:
August 20 : Made medium.
August 21 : Added fruit flies at about 24 hour mark.
August 22 : Nothing to note.
August 23 : Mold seen on surface of medium.
August 24 : Mold still present and noticed 1/8" inch long larvas that had tiny black speck mouth parts moving on the top 1/4" of the medium.
August 25 : Mold is not bad anymore and looks to be almost gone. More larvas seen.
August 26 : First pupaes seen around the outter edge of container.
August 27 : More pupaes around the outter edge of container and still more worms in the top 1/4" of the medium. No more mold seen.
I made my second batch of medium on August 24. I only had a small number of fruit flies left in the original container (less than a dozen) I bought them in from the pet store so I put those in 24 hours after the medium was made. I still have not seen any signs of larvas, but am sure they are there since the container is big and their numbers must be very few compared to my 2 other batches.
