Hi Morgaine,
Chameleons are easily stressed and very sensitive to their care and environment. Usually the first sign of trouble is the eyes. I would bring him to an exotic vet with cham experience.
In the meantime, going over his care with us or other chameleon people may pinpoint possible flaws to be corrected in care.
Something's are very important with cham's; humidity, hydration, privacy, proper nutrition, varied diet. They're very sensitive to vitamins and sometimes it's better to err on the side of caution.
Did you know that besides bugs they will often eat fresh veggies and fruits from a bowl.
One more note; While they need plants for privacy, some are poisonous and may leak sap which can cause eye irritations.
