He will get his heat source from the UTH. The lamp will only heat the ambient air, not the surface where he spends his time. One problem you will encounter with the lamp will be keeping the humidity right, 50-60%. The lamp will dry out the air. If you want the lamp for looks get a moonglow light, they put off very little heat but allows you to watch your snake explore at night. Make sure the temps on the warm side (over the UTH) is 88-90 on the surface, the cool side should be 78-80. Use digital thermomitors, not dial guages. Link
