I attended a "fun day" on Fort Eustis a few years back. Lots of people had their dogs out there, enjoying the weather. One fellow had his Pitt Bull on a chain. A four year old, walking behind his mother, passed by that "well-behaved Pitt" and it was on his head like he was a chew toy. When the owner of the Pitt managed to pry the dog off the kid, what did he do? Jumped in his truck with the dog and hauled out of there like the devil was after him.

I see reason to be cautious about large dogs and most of their owners, and I grew up with a German Shepherd. He was the best dog ever, god rest his soul.

Yes, your dog was well-trained. However, when dealing with people who may or may NOT have their dogs well-trained, I would say it is best to err on the side of caution. God help any dog that ever attacks one of my kids, even if it was a poodle or yorkie. :P The only dog I was ever attacked by in my life was a Springer Spaniel and he was even sweet until the stupid girl who owned him decided it would be funny to kick him in the privates a few times, then lock me in the yard with him. I never blamed the dog, that time.
