I place the snake in a bag, usually a burlap bag, and then in a plastic storage box.
The bag can serve a few purposes:
1 - comforting the snake with a sense of security
2 - hides snake from public view (especially in the case of sitting in a Vet's office
3 - reduce or eliminate nose-rub on potentially damaging surfaces of the transport container
4 - adds another measure of securing the snake, reducing escapes
Of course, a lot of it depends on where you're going, how far you're traveling, etc...
