HERALD SUN (Melbourne, Australia) 23 April 08 Fine for snake smuggler A man caught at Melbourne airport trying to take 12 exotic snakes into NSW has been fined a record $15,000. Matthew Borg, 29, of Tarneit, pleaded guilty in Sunshine Magistrates' Court to five charges under the Victorian Wildlife Act, including illegally selling exotic species and possessing protected wildlife. Borg was caught trying to export 10 cornsnakes and two Burmese pythons. The fine was the largest imposed by a Victorian court for this type of offence. The 12 snakes were destroyed owing to fears they could pose a disease threat. Fine for snake smuggler
