WORLD RADIO SWITZERLAND (Geneva) 24 April 08 New law offers better protection for pets and farm animals There is good news for the country’s seven million pets. As of September 1, a new law should ensure owners take better care of their animals. Under the rules, dog owners will have to undergo compulsory training courses. The same applies to those keeping livestock, fish and reptiles. “Social” animals such a guinea-pigs and parrots will no longer be allowed to be kept on their own, and animal protection units will be set up in each canton to enforce the law. The Swiss farmers’ union says the new regulations will drive up costs, but the country’s biggest animal welfare organisation, Swiss Animal Protection, says they are a major step forward.
