I am in NC. I manage a Pet store and we have to have permits for sugargliders and hedge hogs.Records have to be kept of who we sell to and buy from. A USDA inspector comes around every so often and checks the records and checks the animals.
It is weird. The local Police Cheif has to give the OK on monkeys to be kept in the city and came up with a $300 fee for each monkey.
The owner of the pet store I manage does not cut corners and does not want to cause trouble (get fined) for something we did not know about. So the Dr. Kitrell who is incharge of the NC USDA was called by the local animal control officer about selling torts in the store. Thats when the letter was mailed to me.
Funny thing is another store that just closed down sold torts for years and had the USDA inspections and was never fined or warned about the torts.
