We've finally managed to produce a couple clutches of Algerian Uromastyx (U. acanthinura acanthinura). The first clutch - laid a week ago, looks pretty good and a second clutch was just laid today. That clutch looks a little ifi but at least we finally got our girls to cycle. I still have two more females that look to be gravid so with luck I'll have 4 Algerian clutches to try to hatch the first Algerians produced in captivity from.
I've got one hopefully gravid Ebony Uro as well, (as does Drew Rheinhardt). So we might produce some of them this year as well. If they key out to be pure U alfredschmiti, then those would be the first produced in captivity as well. If they are intergrades with Bandeds (or simply melanistic Bandeds depending on your opinion on some of the specimens), then Deb Wolfram has already produced those. Unfortuninately the keys are fairly imprecise when trying to split out those two species. At best, most of what's in the country is intergrades with maybe half a dozen possible being true alfredschidti. At worst, we have a handful of melanistic Bandeds and a couple of intergrades.
No luck with the Arabians - my males crashed during brumation so my girls are left mateless. At least three other people had pairs setup as of last fall so with luck one of them will produce some viable eggs this year.
We still have a few more gravid Moroccans and a Banded Uro close to laying, otherwise all our the Uros are about done laying for the season. Not a bad year uro wise but it sems to have ben more of a tortoise egg year. Several people, including us have produced a lot more tortoise eggs this year than typical. Now if we can just get everyone to hatch!
Hope all is well with everyone elses breeders! Fewer and fewer are coming in so we really need to put more effort into producing more in captivity if we want to have all these species to still be available in North America in another ten years.
