Yes, he was smuggling illegal animals. However, they make it sound like this man was taking endangered wildlife out of the wild, yet he likely had captive bred animals, based on the species. Illegal is illegal, but there are shade of morality, and he was in the less shady side in this case, IMO. Why can't the press express this point?
