Place the rodent in that spare pillow case / snake bag and with a firm spin just thwack it down on the floor, table or cinder block.
The rat / mouse is dead instantly.
I raise my own rodents, and even after countless feedings, it still tugs at me a little whenever I toss in a critter I have raised and cared for over a period of weeks.
