when you use an ultrasound to monitor follicle growth (or some supremely talented fingers) you don't need to waste time pairing up "on a chance" or to "grow follicles". females cycle at different times of year, and you can manipulate follicle size somewhat with temps and feeding.

once the females follicles are in the 12-20mm range, you can put in a male and get the job done. usually within a few hours. pull the male the next day, and send him on other adventures.

monitoring follicles makes breeding more precise and less taxing on the animals, eliminating the need for pairing them up over long periods, hoping for a match.
