It had a tail portion of previous shed skin(s) that did not come off, this will dry and tighten to the point of constricting blood-flow to the tail, resulting in the tail tip actually dying and falling off. This is much more common in the hobby than it should be. Everytime a snake goes through the shedding process, it should be checked to make sure the entire skin is shed, especially the ocular lenses(eye caps), and tail tips.
