I posted here Sunday that my female dropped 3 eggs unexpectedly, well I think I dropped the ball on them.
When the female dropped, both pet stores near my house were closed, and I tried to get little info here on what to do with the eggs so I did what I could, but think it was a little to much heat.I used a heating pad from one of my old set ups in a styrofoam ice chest I picked up from the pet shop and the temps looked great and I went to work.I checked the eggs when I got home and the temps shot up to about 105 degrees in the container they were in,so i was a bit worried to say the least. They held strong at about 89 for a few hours before I left,so I was very upset at what had happened. When the pet shop opened I bought a zoo med temp controller ( which they dont even stock, someone ordered it and didnt pick it up,luckliy for me).I took an old regrigerator I had planned on building an incubator with and made a quick set up to keep the eggs warm with a drop light and it works great, keeping my temps between 88 and 89 degrees with no problem.I have been checking it every few hours and have been very pleased with it so far.
The eggs just started going downhill fast. They are very dimpled and actually started turning colors. When I checked them this morning, they had some kind of fly larvae crawling on one of the eggs ( the worst looking of the clutch) so I removed it,set up a new container with fresh vermiculite for the other 2 and put them back in my fridge just in case.
I took the worst of the 3 out and decided to cut it open.I wish I had pics of the egg beforehand, but I didnt think to take any till after I opened it.Inside the egg I found the egg was actually not at all what I was expecting .Having never done this before,I thought it would be like a regular chicken egg, which is definitely was not!
The "eggwhite" was not gooey like I thought it would/should be like,it was almost like a gel,it still had liquid in it,I was just wanting to know if the egg was "cooked" or is that what it was supposed to be like, and I had a tiny undeveloped baby ball python sitting on top.So I guess I just want to know if the baby died when the temps went through the roof,or did I kill it when I opened the egg?My vermiculite is not soggy,it clumps but definitely doesnt drip, and the temps stay level in the incubator leaving condensation on the lid.here are some before, after and a pic of the baby ball for those interested in seeing a developing snake.
I was planning on leaving the other 2 in to see what happens,am I wasting my time or is there a chance?
