I would not keep a lid on...

You will build up too much moisture and the eggs can become wet. You can leave a lid on and keep the match sticks or something similar on all sides to keep a gap around the lid so the air still exchanges. I had pretty good luck just by having a nickel sized hole in the center of my lid.
