It looks male to me; I see a v-shaped line of pores, and it looks like hemipenal bulges are present. That said, a second opinion confirming or telling me that I'm an idiot will probably be along soon.
You should probably recommend to your friend that sand is not a great substrate for them to be on, too; it can result in impactions in their gut, which can be fatal. The general consensus is that it's less hazardous to adults than juveniles, but if it were my gecko, I wouldn't risk it regardless. ----- 0.1 Albino Leopard Gecko - Tigger
