Hi Nate,
Plants are not necessary or recommended as they will be easily uprooted by this fossorial lizard. You could pot them, but plants would simply take up valuable floor room and since Tiliqua don't climb, floor space is valued.
We use pvc piping for our blue-tonques. If in your case, you want a more natural look, you can cover or paint the outside of the tube for effect. We are currently using Aspen as a substrate for Blue-Tonques.
