As far as getting sand in the water dish, I have also gone through this problem so many times. What worked for me was building a ledge of some sort as part of the background, and putting the waterdish underneath it. This creates just enough space for her to get into and out of it, but she doesn't jump into it and jump out of it and get sand everywhere. Solved my sand problems!
