During the Summer, I use a heat mat 24/7 with a thermometer probe under the warm side hide. I also have a hide on the cool side.

For the winter, depending on the temperature in the house, I complement the heat mat with an overheard infrared light. No UV lighting required. Be careful to keep your snake's enclosure away from radiators or vents during the winter to avoid drying out your snake.

I found that an overhead heating source was drying out some of the scales on my ball.
