Depending upon how large an area your talking....
My water would always get out of his enclosure from the time he was 2ft to 5ft, in a room that was 360 sq ft. Provided your lizard is very active you will have no problem finding it. Instead of looking for him, listen for him.
Go into the room after being out of it for about 30 minutes, to an hour, and then slowly sneak into the room, like I said if your lizard is active I gaurentee you will hear him/her scratching around or climbing around. Mine would never stay still for more then 10 minutes, there was always so much to explore!
