I just aquired another Florida box turtle. The situation: about two-three acres of woods near my house are being cleared for apartments. They've already cleared about 3/4 of the woods, and the rest is still being worked on. I do lawn care around that area, and know there is no other suitable habitat to go to. There are three junkyards, and a "ghetto" apartment complex surrounding the area where I found him, and none of the above are suitable habitat. Is there anything I could do to help the situation? I've already contacted Fish and Game, and they said that Floridas aren't protected, so they have the right to bulldoze them and their habitat, as long as the property owner gave them permission to. They said I could relocate any if I see them(there is actually no law against that), but relocation is never a good idea. For right now, I have the Florida with me. I'm probably going to end up keeping him, I know the area, and it would just be too risky to release him back where I found him at. But I'd love to know if there is anything I can do to help the situation. As of right now, help seems non-existant, but I'd like to know of anything I can do.
