EVENING TELEGRAPH (Derby, UK) 28 July 08 Firefighters fail to find snake hiding in car

A snake escaped from a cage in its owners car in a supermarket car park in Derby.

The owner of the pet reptile was putting away her shopping when she noticed the 4ft corn snake slithering through a tiny hole inside of her car.

She called the fire service who sent out an officer to investigate at Asda, in Grampian Way, Sinfin, shortly after 6pm on Friday.

The woman who owns the snake was asked to drive her Vauxhall people carrier to Ascot Drive fire station where a crew started to dismantle side panels inside the car to locate the snake.

An officer from the RSPCA was also called in but, after more than an hour of searching, they could not find the snake and put the panels of the car back together.

The owner was advised to drive home and contact a garage to see if they could find the snake.

She also told firefighters she planned to leave food in the car for the snake in the hope it would come out of its hiding place.

Ian Flanders, watch manager for Derbyshire fire service at Ascot Drive, said: “The owner of the snake was quite calm while we took her car apart but, however hard we tried, we could not locate it.”
