Basically, pick a letter and go with it....you could do squares and circles for that matter. Also, the normal "code" is going to be a derivative of the mutation...in other words, when talking about a simple recessive mutation such as albinism, an albino would be aa, while the normal would be AA, and hets would be Aa.
