According to some species concepts, a difference of a single character is enough for a new species to be recognized. It isn't hard to find differences as small as this, especially since molecular techniques are widely employed. The result is a plethora of new names for old taxa. Old American taxa such as Elaphe guttata, Sceloporus graciosus and Charina bottae are being splintered simply because some scientists do not know what a species is. A species is not a mtDNA lineage. | ||
