That is exactly how I feel. I actually helped someone overcome their fear of snakes. She had the idea they were "cold and slimey". I told her I would hold his head if she would pet him. Two or three minutes went by after she kept barely touching him, then she took a deep breath and asked "Can I hold him?" Now everytime she comes over she wants to hold my snakes. Now if I had kept my snakes hid because I knew she had a fear, she would still have the idea they were nasty slimey animals.
