I keep my 1.2 adult proven yellow ackies on newspaper as a substrate. I just give them an egg laying sweater box to lay in and they do great. But if you are set on an eye pleasing enclosure with 1 foot of substrate you may want to just use a large tank. say 75 gallon or more for a group.
