Firstly, keep in mind the OP is talking about WILD CAUGHT Eastern Hogs - guess what they've been eating in the wild - hahahahahaha
Those off the shelf products are in some kind of oil based suspension usually, and they will extract the oils from the scenting item and add them to it, that keeps them from spoiling, usually.
It's not much different from my method, and that is to make a "soup" that goes from the freezer to the microwave for 15 or 20 seconds and back in the freezer after scenting. When heated the "oils" float to the top of the soup and you just dip the head of the mouse in the soup.
Ok, so we need a disclaimer here, here it is - scenting is not for everyone, and there is a risk. I can't quantify that risk but is fairly safe. I've raised 1000's of hatchlings in my life that required scenting with excellent results. One of my buddies is a microbiologist at Ft. Sam Houston and he checks my critters for me, they are pretty durn clean. Almost every snake will have something, even captive born - do some stool samples and you will see. I suggest to the original poster if he is going to catch wild Easterns, they will have more parasites than most of the Toads they eat by biological concentration. I can see the lung flukes now hahahahahaha.
So if I made any snide remarks, or made fun of the Hog MASTER I do apologize, but I didn't think they were snide and I really wasn't making fun of him until now. ----- Herp Conservation Unlimited
