I think as a good rule of thumb, if you can house them separately then do so. That being said, a lot of people do keep hatchlings together, and in practice you can do so. Like you mention, make sure you feed them separately. In terms of illnesses, or diseases, or even stress, these things and the risks can be exacerbated with cage mates.
