Laura,
Thank you for posting that good, valuable, information. Your first post should be bookmarked, copied/pasted, etc, by every keeper.
"I saw the snake pushed to the limits of stress and he never lashed out, struck, or anything negative. He just hissed as always and really, just tried to escape."
It's been my experience that biters bite & hissers hiss. Just keep your ear out for that unmistakable pissed hiss. You'll know it when you hear it. My large female has always been a bit of a hisser & never has struck/bitten. The more often I handle her the less she hisses.
A possible solution for your cage heating issue is to go to a hardware store or one of the big home improvement stores and get some "Reflectix." I've never used it personally but everyone that I've talked that has, swears by it.
Use it to cover the top, sides & back of the cage and monitor the temps closely to make sure it doesn't get too hot for your snake.
It comes in rolls and looks like bubbled aluminum foil. I think a 2ft wide roll with 25ft in length runs about $25 but well worth it from what I hear. I'll be using it soon. You can also get 4ft wide rolls, too. A roll of 4 x 25 will run about $45.
I'll try to get some photos of my adult male & female's spurs so you can see the difference between the two, like Kelly was saying. If you can post a few photos of the last 3ft or so of your Burmese Python, side shots, and maybe a top view, I might be able to tell you if it's a male or female.
Hang in there!
