This could be a long heated debate. So I'll answer this as simply as I can:

Yes, genetic diversity is important. It is in any living organism. However, with snakes it is less important that it is in people or other "higher" life forms. Generally, breeders engage in this practice to isolate a gene and determine how it is inherited, after that point most people will out cross their stock to ensure some sort of genetic diversity is attained.
