You just need to protect your lower leg as well as just your foot (which is why regular hiking boots don't cut it). That level of protection should be fine if you're just tramping around in the US. But if you're planning on going somewhere with anacondas or fer-de-lances or something else big and nasty, it would be worth it to shell out for the extra security of specialized snake boots.
