Well it looks like it could easily be genetic . Keep in mind that you can often times push things out of a female too, the girls also build up "musk" and it looks alot like a weak example of a sperm plug yet it isn't.. If it probes shallow then it still may be a girl, it would be very rare that a male would probe shallow if properly probed, to probe less than 5 scales in would likely indicate a female and not a shallow male,to have a male probe shallow on both sides sounds kinda wrong to me...
