What is your setup like for your kingsnake? and how long has it been in there? Is it in a busy part of the house?
If it's a new snake he may take a while to settle in, and more physical cover (branches, plants, etc) may encourage him to spend more time out and about. That being said, sometimes you just get a nervous snake. I've seen kings that spend all day cruising about and others who spend all their time under a hide as you've described.
Probably the most active snakes I've kept are various garters with rat snakes being a close second. But again, this is merely a generality rather than a rule. Others may have had different experiences and can offer more advice.
