One reason I have heard for that is that the belly looks like Indian corn, with the bold black checkered markings. The species guttata, is the only one with that belly marking. This includes the corn, the Great Plains, & the rosy. The Texas is the same species as most of the rat snakes, including the black & the yellow. The black is also locally called the pilot blacksnake, & the yellow is called a chicken snake. | ||
