If you have cats and dogs I imagine the can thing may look like toys to them...consider the flour on the floor to see where he is coming out at night but you may have to crate the 4 legged critters so they wont mess up your tracks.
Fortunately,my door to the rest of the house stays close and there was no space underneath for an escape so we knew ours was in here.
