You can sit your heating pad outside the hole but don't sit it so close that it creates a warm spot on the other side of the wall.
Also don't limit your search to the hole & warm spots, we had one get out & found it a week later curled up behind the trash can on the linoleum(sp?) floor, probably the coldest spot in the house.
Also don't give up on your sons room & the rooms near by, just because you didn't find it don't mean it's not there.
